Marie Riccio’s contemporary still life paintings invite you into a conversation of color, composition, and relationships. The objects in her paintings interact within each composition, inviting artist and observer into a dialogue, revealing and reflecting what is happening in inner and outer worlds.

Riccio finds excitement in the practice of understanding edges, subtle value changes and color. As an observer of the physical world, she is also intrigued by measuring and understanding the underlying structure of things. For her, that underlying structure is necessary for relationships to occur and to create the space to enable honest, and even unsettling, conversations. She directs the tabletop stage of the still-life, letting the objects play out scenes, surprising her with what is revealed. Evolving from this process, the painting begins to breath, come to life and conversations emerge.

“I often repaint and move the objects on the canvas during the painting process seeking out the right relationships so the objects speak to each other and eventually invite me into the conversation,” Riccio says.

“I know when a painting is complete when I realize what the conversation is about and I sense that the objects are in their intended place.”
