TAG TALK
SATURDAY, January 17, 5 - 9 PM
TAG/The Artists’ Gallery will start the new year with a celebration of its 25th birthday. In 1990 sixteen artists came together to form a cooperative and stage exhibits at Mahogany Craft in Frederick. In 1993 the group moved to its own space on East Church Street, opening new solo and group shows every month.
Twenty-five years after its founding, TAG is located in a larger gallery on North Market Street and has 24 members and seven associate members.
Over the years, some of Frederick’s best known artists have been members of TAG. All of the founders and past members who were part of the gallery for five or more years have been invited back for a special 25th Anniversary exhibit, to open on January 1 with a reception during First Saturday on January 2.
“25 Years: A Celebration” will include the work of twenty past members plus all the current members.
“We are thrilled to welcome back many of the founding members,” said TAG president Marc Weinberg.
Founding members with work in the exhibit are Andrea Burchette, Teke Hoffman, Michael Douglas Jones, Mary Klotz, Marianne Kost, Wendell Poindexter, Deborah Souders, Shelley Stevens, Marilu Tousignaut, Harriet Wise, and Homer Yost. Joe Campbell, Michael Hauver, Carolyn Parker, Ed Stockman, and Paulette Warwick were also founding members of the gallery.
Past members with work in the show include Dorothea Barrick, Joy Boudreaux, Nina Chung-Dwyer, Steven Dobbin, Christine Hahn, Carolyn Goell Mayer, Linda Harrison-Parsons, Jeanean Songco Martin, and Wanda Taylor Remington.
A TAG Talk Panel will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2pm (snow date Jan. 24) and will feature distinguished guests from the arts community. The panel members are Louise Kennelly, executive director of the Frederick Arts Council; TAG founding members Wendell Poindexter, Homer Yost and Shelley Stevens; and artist Steven Dobbin, who was a member of TAG for twelve years. Stevens, who is still a member, has served the gallery as its president and is currently coordinating TAG’s associate member program.
The exhibit will continue through Sunday, Jan. 31. TAG, at 216 N. Market Street, Frederick, is open Friday and Saturday from noon to 8pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm, or by appointment.
