Julie Maynard’s work is a form of painting with paper on two- or three-dimensional surfaces, building up layers that incorporate bits and pieces picked up along the Potomac River and city streets.
The works on paper are collages of advertisements and illustrations torn from magazines and catalogues. Found objects add texture and shadow lines. The three-dimensional pieces often begin with a shape from nature—a bird, a leaf—cut from wood.
The process of collage parallels the passing of time—layer settling down upon layer—and makes room for shards of the real world in the form of photographs and mementos.
Here there be, not monsters but owls, and train wrecks, and once-loved houses… and whatever comes next.
