X-ING A PAREGRAB

Sculptor Luc Fiedler’s exhibit "X-ing A Paragrab" was inspired by the 1849 Edgar Allen Poe story of the same name. Fiedler’s series help explain his sculptural processes and influences.

“Just as writers use letters and words to craft sentences, poems, and stories, I combine individual elements with other forms and processes to create a statement. These works are an homage to various sculptors like Michael Todd, Richard Hunt, Thomas Walsh, and Aldon Addington, just to name a few” says Fiedler, “ But by no means am I trying to express their works. Just their influence.”

SCATTERED STRUCTURES

Contemporary Still Life Paintings

Marie Riccio’s contemporary still life exhibition “Scattered Structures” showcases recent works centered on the relationships between objects, space, color, and atmosphere. Drawing from her roots in abstract painting, Riccio’s still life oil paintings incorporate elements of flatness co-existing with three-dimensional illusions, creating a push-pull of space and interpretation.

Working from direct observation, Riccio is drawn to the underlying structure and shape of objects. Color and composition also play a major role in her work, with bold color juxtaposed with muted shades and compositional elements leading the viewer into and through each piece. Within each scattered compositional structure a unique and personal world is created.

“In this body of work, I found that the composition’s core arrangements were not always realized, completed or connected. Structure sometimes hides in darkness to be awakened with a shot of color or is so subtle that edges disappear,” Riccio says.

“Color is also a main character in my work. I pushed myself through these paintings to experience variations of grays/neutrals. Setting intense colors against these grays/neutrals allowed the purer colors to radiate, jolting out of the work’s atmosphere and space,” Riccio says.
