TAG TALK

Sunday, October 15, 2–4 pm

This is my first solo show at TAG and I am excited to share my work with you. Art for me is a path of discovery. When I pick up a paintbrush I see the world with a fresh eye. I hope viewing the result will do the same for you.

My paintings—done in oil on canvas, paper, and panel—focus on the modern landscape. I often chose urban scenes where I find a tenuous and often curious balance between nature and man, the animate and the inanimate. Many of my scenes will be familiar to Frederick residents and reveal its rare combination of historic beauty and funky charm. Recently I have sharpened my sensitivity to changing light and weather by painting outdoors but most often I finish my painting in the studio aiming for a sense of timelessness using careful composition and subtle color.

People often compare my work to Edward Hopper; it is reminiscent of his sense of light and solidity of form. But, instead of a theme of urban isolation, I delve into the hidden mystery in the ordinary:  a liquor store, suburban street, a farmhouse seen by a passing car—each detail has a part to play. My intention is that my artwork will give you a new appreciation of light and form as it is reflected in the world around us.
